Though he’s chasing NHL goal-scoring history, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin took a moment to honour the historic career of the goalie on the opposite bench.

After losing 4-2 to the Minnesota Wild, the Capitals players started to file off the ice. Ovechkin, however, knew it was their last game of the season against the Western Conference team and, thus, their last matchup against netminder Marc-Andre Fleury.

The captain then rushed to his bench and called his teammates to congratulate Fleury, who had served as the backup on Thursday, on a successful career.

Ovechkin and Fleury have had their fair share of meetings since both entered the league — Fleury spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are a divisional rival to the Capitals. Ovechkin has faced the Canadian netminder 47 times in his career, scoring on him 28 times—the most goals and games against any goalie, according to NHL.com.

The 40-year-old goaltender announced ahead of the season that this would be his last, and he finishes his 21-year career as the second-winningest goaltender in NHL history, behind only Martin Brodeur.

Fleury has found some success this season, playing primarily in a backup role. He’s started in 21 games with a 12-9 record, a 2.78 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage and one shutout.

He’ll appear in his final regular season game on April 15.
