Patriots President Jonathan Kraft was shown on TV during the Patriots' loss on Sunday appearing to tell his father, owner Robert Kraft, that the “play calling is terrible.” Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt says he's aware that ownership wasn't happy.
Van Pelt was asked by reporters about the Patriots getting stuffed for no gain on a run up the middle on third-and-1 and again on fourth-and-1 from the Cardinals' 4-yard line, and Van Pelt acknowledged that everyone in the building was unhappy about it.
"I know Jonathan was upset and that came out. There was nobody more pissed off than I was, I promise you that," Van Pelt said. “Would I call that play again in that situation? Probably. We needed half a yard. We called a similar play at the goal line in the Jets game to win it. That’s an attitude play. That’s a move guys off the ball, two lead blockers for a good running back play. Unfortunately it didn’t work out, and that was a big swing in that game."
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo didn't seem happy with Van Pelt's play call, either, although Mayo later tried to walk that back.
For his part, Van Pelt doesn't think his calls were bad, he just thinks the plays were bad.
"Schematically, we had the right call on," Van Pelt said. "We just didn't get the job done."
