It seems that leading an NFL team has been but a stepping stone for Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott until he finally fulfilled his true dream: driving a Zamboni.

Luckily for McDermott, his friends over at the Buffalo Sabres found a way to make that happen.

The 50-year-old was granted the opportunity to take a spin on the Zamboni at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo ahead of Tuesday’s game between the Sabres and the San Jose Sharks, something McDermott said was like “fulfilling a lifelong dream.”

“You know, I’m a simple guy and this is like me fulfilling a lifelong dream. Getting a chance to be down on the ice, number one,” McDermott said on the Bills’ broadcast.

“You walk on the field, that’s one thing, but to walk on the ice, to me, is another thing. Can’t be more thankful to the staff that allowed me to fulfill that dream. It was really a dream come true and quite fascinating to be down there.”

The 24-29-6 Sabres might hope that, in addition to smoothing the ice, McDermott left behind some of his winning acumen. In his eight years in Buffalo, he’s led the Bills to the post-season in seven, including two trips to the AFC Championship game. The Sabres, on the other hand, have suffered at the hands of the hockey gods, and haven’t made the post-season since 2011.
