Blackhawks’ Bedard receives 10-minute misconduct for second straight game

Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard came into Thursday’s game against the San Jose Sharks with zero game misconducts in his NHL career.

Fast forward to Saturday, and he now has two.

Bedard received a 10-minute misconduct for a second consecutive game at the end of Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the host Vancouver Canucks.

The game started to get heated late in the third period after Blackhawks centre Jason Dickinson hit Canucks forward Filip Chytil from behind and no penalty was called. Chytil, who has a concussion history, was forced to leave the game early.

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had no update on Chytil’s status after the game.

After the hit, emotions boiled over with under three minutes left as four Canucks met Bedard, a North Vancouver native, for a scrum behind the Vancouver net.

Bedard, Blackhawks teammate Frank Nazar, and Canucks Conor Garland and Filip Hronek were all handed 10-minute misconducts as a result of the scuffle.

The 19-year-old Bedard was visibly frustrated as he walked to the team dressing room, throwing his helmet down the tunnel before coming back to apologize to a member of the Blackhawks staff.

Bedard’s early banishment comes just two days after the first of his career. He received one in Thursday’s loss to the Sharks for “abuse of officials.”

Bedard said after the game that the penalty was called for something he said after an uncalled trip on Sharks defenceman Mario Ferraro as Bedard tried to make a move in the offensive zone.

“I don’t think it was too crazy, but he’s the ref, so he gets to make that call,” Bedard told reporters Thursday. “… You don’t really expect that, but it happens.”

It’s been a frustrating sophomore season for Bedard, as with Saturday’s loss, the Blackhawks’ record drops to 20-37-9.

He probably made some history Saturday, as it will most likely be the only time the usually mild-mannered Bedard gets misconducts in back-to-back games. However, that’s not the type of history he was hoping to make this season.
