General manager Don Waddel has announced that Kirill Marchenko suffered a broken jaw on Sunday and has now been placed on injury reserve. At this time there is no timeline for his return.
While seated on the bench in the second period of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Stars, a loose puck struck Marchenko in the jaw. He left the game with a towel pressed to his face and was taken to a hospital in the Dallas area during the third period to have his jaw treated.
Marchenko underwent surgery for the break on Monday.
The length of his absence has not been confirmed, but a broken jaw can typically sideline a player for six to eight weeks.
The Blue Jackets travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks on Monday, and Marchenko won’t be joining his team. He will remain in Dallas with a trainer to continue treatment for the injury.
Marchenko leads his team in goals with 31 and has 34 assists. His 55 points are the second most on the Blue Jackets, following Zach Werenski, who has 57.
With Sean Monahan also out until mid-to-late March due to a wrist injury that required surgery, Columbus is now missing two players from their top line.
