Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand did not return to Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins after he was hit from behind by Pierre-Olivier Joseph.
The incident occurred at 5:56 into the first period with the Bruins leading 1-0.
Marchand’s legs appeared to give out as he fell head and shoulders first awkwardly into the boards. He remained down and had to be helped off the ice.
No penalty was called on the play.
The 36-year-old Marchand is second on the Bruins in scoring this season with 21 goals and 47 points. He also had one goal in four games to help Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off last month.
It wasn’t the only injury news to come out of the game, as Joseph was injured in the second period on a hit from Bruins forward Mark Kastelic.
The play happened in the same corner where Joseph hit Marchand.
Pittsburgh ruled Joseph out with an upper-body injury as well.
Joseph had played 3:35 in the game before being forced to leave. The 25-year-old has three points in 46 games this season, spending time with the Penguins and St. Louis Blues.
