Jeremy Swayman is ready to start earning his new contract.

Fresh off signing an eight-year, $66-million extension with the Boston Bruins on Sunday, the team announced that Swayman will make his first start of the season in Thursday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Because the 25-year-old netminder missed the entirety of training camp and the pre-season due to the contract standoff, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery went with Joonas Korpisalo in Tuesday’s season opener against the Florida Panthers.

Things didn’t go so well for Korpisalo.

After conceding his fifth goal of the night in the second period against the Panthers, Florida fans had some fun at the 30-year-old’s expense. As the Bruins worked to chip away at their goal differential, the chant “We want Swayman!” filled the arena. The Bruins lost the game 6-4.

Montgomery clearly heard the noise, as his All-Star netminder will get his first start of the season on Thursday in Boston’s home opener.

Since joining the Bruins in the 2020-21 season, Swayman has a .919 save percentage and 2.34 GAA over 132 career games.
