Texans safety Calen Bullock was penalized for a hit on a defenseless player for the big shot that sent Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose to the hospital. Bullock said he does not anticipate punishment from the NFL, even though it's a near certainty that Bullock will be fined.
"No, not really," Bullock said, via Aaron Wilson of KPRC. "My intention was never to go out there and just try to completely take someone out of the game and hurt somebody."
Officials did not eject Bullock with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter after injuring DuBose, who had medical personnel tend to him for 11 minutes on the field before he was transported via ambulance to a local hospital. DuBose will remain in the hospital overnight but received "positive feedback" after undergoing head and neck imaging, coach Mike McDaniel said postgame.
“My intentions was never to go out and hurt nobody, that’s never any of our intentions,” Bullock said. “So, prayers out to him and his family. I hope he’s good. I was just seeing the ball and I was breaking on the ball and it just happened to be one of those type of plays.”
The Texans were without linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who missed his second game while serving a three-game suspension for an illegal hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence was carted off with a concussion.
Now, Bullock is under the spotlight for his illegal hit.
“It’s very difficult for a defensive player, because we trying to think about protecting them, but we also want to protect ourselves,” Bullock said. “They can hit us wrong. It’s angles. You think too much trying to protect everyone on the field, but sometimes it doesn’t happen like that. At the end of the day, it’s still a violent game.”
