Canadiens defenceman David Savard says he’ll retire after playoffs

A longtime defenceman is planning to hang up his skates — he’s just not sure exactly when.

Montreal Canadiens blue-liner David Savard told reporters on Friday that he intends to retire after the team’s playoff run is over.

Savard, 34, has spent parts of 14 seasons in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Canadiens.

He won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Lightning in 2021 following a mid-season trade by the Blue Jackets.

The St-Hyacinthe, Que., native returned to his home province and signed with the Canadiens, where he has spent the past four seasons.

In 75 games this season, Savard tallied one goal and 14 assists. The shutdown defenceman has appeared in 870 career games, totalling 54 goals and 188 assists for 242 points.

He was selected by the Blue Jackets in the fourth round of the 2009 draft and made his NHL debut during the 2011-12 season.

The Canadiens open their first-round series against the top-seeded Washington Capitals on Monday at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, with live coverage available on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
