Canadiens’ Hutson takes blame for Ovechkin’s OT winner: ‘I lost my check twice’

Montreal Canadiens star rookie defenceman Lane Hutson is taking his first-ever loss in the Stanley Cup Playoffs hard.
Despite picking up two assists in his playoff debut, Hutson was only thinking about what he could’ve done differently to help his team win Monday’s Game 1 against the Washington Capitals.
The rookie defenceman was just behind Alex Ovechkin when the Capitals star banged home the overtime winner, and Hutson took accountability for the goal after the game.
“I lost my check twice, and they scored,” Hutson said. “It’s something I gotta learn from, it just sucks that it happened on that one.”

Hutson finished the game as a minus-1, but picked up an assist on each of the Canadiens’ third-period goals that erased a 2-0 deficit and sent the game to OT. With his two points, Hutson became the first Montreal rookie blue liner with multiple points in a playoff game since P.K. Subban in 2010.
The rookie led the Canadiens in ice time (25:35) in Game 1.
