Canadiens take huge step toward playoff spot with win over Flyers

It was a wonderful Saturday for the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens extended their lead in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 3-2 win over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

The Canadiens are now four points ahead of the New York Rangers after the latter team lost to the New Jersey Devils.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, another team trying to track down Montreal, lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Brendan Gallagher and Lane Hutson scored goals in the first three minutes of the third period to put Montreal on top before Nick Suzuki added some insurance.

Ryan Poehling opened the scoring for the Flyers and Tyson Foerster made it close late with a last-minute tally.

More to come.
