Canucks acquire Brannstrom from Avalanche for Poolman, fourth-round pick

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenceman Erik Brännström from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Tucker Poolman and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

As part of the deal, the Canucks are retaining 20 per cent of Poolman’s salary.

Brännström was immediately placed on waivers by the Canucks, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Brännström joined the Avalanche this past off-season signing a one-year $900,000 deal. The 24-year-old was a restricted free agent coming into the summer but did not receive a qualifying offer from the Ottawa Senators.

The native of Eksjo, Sweden, picked up an assist in three pre-season games with the Avalanche.

In his last season with Ottawa, Brännström had three goals and 17 assists in 76 games in the 2023-24 season. Over his NHL career, he has seven goals and 62 assists in 266 games, all with the Ottawa Senators.

He was originally drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Draft, going 15th overall in the first round.

Poolman has missed the last two seasons while dealing with  with neurological complications from migraines which have hampered him since the 2021-22 season.

Poolman signed a four-year deal with the Canucks back in 2021 after spending four seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, who drafted the defenceman in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Draft.
