The Vancouver Canucks added captain Quinn Hughes back to their blueline but lost another budding star to an injury.
Rookie defenceman Elias Pettersson was injured in the first period against the Calgary Flames and didn’t return to the game.
The Canucks did not disclose what type of injury Pettersson was dealing with but he was involved in a scrum late in the first period that might have contributed to it.
It started with Pettersson stepping up to throw a big open ice hit on the Flames’ Nazem Kadri. In response to the hit, Flames forward Connor Zary knocked Petterson down with a high hit and then pinned him to the ice.
Zary was given a two-minute interference penalty on the play. Pettersson missed six minutes of game time and returned for one more full shift before the end of the first period, then didn’t rejoin his teammates to start the second.
Tuesday’s game was Pettersson’s 15th in the NHL. He has two assists in those games.
The Canucks were already playing without veteran defenceman Tyler Myers, who missed the Flames game for an undisclosed reason.
