Canucks’ Derek Forbort suffers broken orbital bone vs. Wild

The fallout of Saturday’s messy contest with the Minnesota Wild did not end up being news the Vancouver Canucks wanted to hear.

After exiting early due to a late punch in a fight with Wild centre Yakor Trenin, Canucks defenceman Derek Forbort ultimately suffered a broken orbital bone on the play, head coach Rick Tocchet said Sunday.

The fight ended with both players going down to the ice, at which point Trenin threw a punch with Forbort’s head on the ice.

Forbot was seen clutching his face following the altercation and eventually had to exit the game and make his way to Vancouver’s locker room.

“Obviously, he’s out for the year, and then we’ll go from there,” Tocchet said. “It’s a tough loss for us. You don’t want a guy like that starting the summer like that. He’s a big part of our team.”

Trenin was then ejected from the game following a lengthy review by the officials. And he made his displeasure with the decision known, as Trenin verbally berrated the officials before making his way off the ice. The 28-year-old even tried to make a bee-line towards a couple Canucks players before eventually leaving the contest for good.

“Yeah, there is a code,” Tocchet said when asked if Trenin broke an unwritten rule with the punch. “But unfortunately, it didn’t happen and we gotta move on and we’ll figure out those things down the road.”

Canucks captain Quinn Hughes called Trenin’s antics a “circus act,” after the game while defenceman Marcus Pettersson said the punch was “one of the worst things he’s ever seen.”

The Canucks went on to lose to the Wild 3-2 in overtime.
