Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is expected to miss a third consecutive game due to an undisclosed injury.
Head coach Rick Tocchet told reporters on Wednesday that the star defenceman will not travel with the team for Thursday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.
The reigning Norris Trophy winner leads the league in scoring by blueliners with 59 points (14 goals and 45 assists) in 47 games this season.
Hughes is also Vancouver’s leading scorer and has at least one point in each of his last eight games, with five goals and seven assists across the stretch.
After missing Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Hughes was seen skating before the Canucks’ practice on Tuesday morning but left the ice before his teammates joined.
The Canucks blanked the Colorado Avalanche 3-0 Tuesday night with Hughes out of the lineup.
The injury also throws into question Hughes’ participation in next week’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
He has been named to the U.S. roster alongside his brother, New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes, but could be held out if the ailment persists.
