The Calgary Flames will fall behind in the Western Conference wild-card race after dropping a crucial home-ice tilt with the Dallas Stars 5-2 on Thursday.

Mikael Granlund scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Stars midway through the second period, before Mikko Rantanen and Matt Duchene added insurance markers late in the third.

Backup Casey DeSmith shut the door with 46 saves en route to his 13th win of the season.

Flames forward Nazem Kadri scored twice in his fifth-straight game with a tally, while netminder Dustin Wolf made 15 saves on 19 shots.

The Flames were stripped of two goals early on successful challenges from Stars head coach Pete DeBoer, both coming when they were trailing 1-0.

Calgary forward Connor Zary left the game in the third period after suffering a lower-body injury.
