Devils’ Cotter to have hearing with NHL for high hit on Islanders’ Pelech

Paul Cotter could face disciplinary action relatively soon.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday that it will conduct a hearing with the New Jersey Devils centre for an illegal check to the head of New York Islanders‘ Adam Pelech.
The news of an impending hearing comes mere hours after the incident occurred during the Islanders’ 1-0 win over the Devils.
Cotter received a five-minute major and game misconduct midway through the second period after he rushed towards Pelech, who was dumping the puck into New York’s offensive zone, and collided with the Islanders’ defenceman.
Pelech was visibly bleeding after taking the hit and eventually left the ice — while yelling some choice words in the direction of Cotter — and did not return to the game.
Following the win, New York head coach Patrick Roy didn’t provide an update on Pelech’s status but said “that’s the kind of hit we don’t love to see,” when speaking to reporters.
Meanwhile, should Cotter face any form of disciplinary action it would be the first fine or suspension of his four-year NHL career (271 games). The 25-year-old is in his first season with New Jersey.
The Devils and Islanders both return to action on Tuesday, with New Jersey visiting the Boston Bruins and New York hosting the Washington Capitals.
