Devils’ Dougie Hamilton out ‘an extended period’ with injury

After making some moves at the trade deadline, the New Jersey Devils are facing some time without one of their top defencemen.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald told reporters on Friday that Dougie Hamilton will be sidelined for an “extended period” after he suffered an injury on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old appeared to suffer the injury at the end of the first period against the Dallas Stars after colliding with forward Mason Marchment. He was able to leave the ice on his own, though appeared to be limping.

He remained on the bench for the remainder of the first but did not come out for the middle frame.

This comes as more bad news for a Devils team that has been struck by injuries this season. No. 1 centreman Jack Hughes underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be ready for training camp in September.

The team is also without defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler, who Fitzgerald confirmed is done for the remainder of the season with an undisclosed injury.

The Devils made some moves at the deadline to fill injury-related holes in their lineup, acquiring Cody Glass and Brian Dumoulin, in addition to locking up Jonathan Kovacevic with a contract extension.
