New Jersey Devils forward Stefan Noesen may be hearing from the league office soon.
Noesen was handed a match penalty and ejected from Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres after an open-ice hit against Tage Thompson.
The incident occurred near the Devils blue line. As Noesen skated toward his net to retrieve the puck, he appeared to clip Thompson with a high left elbow.
Thompson’s helmet flew off as he went down to the ice following the collision and play immediately stopped.
The Sabres forward stayed down for a few moments and did not return to the game, but head coach Lindy Ruff said after that he is “good” and “passed all the tests.”
Buffalo beat New Jersey 4-3.
Thompson, 27, had already recorded one goal and two assists during the game, pushing his team-leading points total to 48 (26 goals, 22 assists) over 47 contests.
Buffalo returns to the ice Tuesday when it hosts Columbus.
