Flames announce interim coaching appointments
Flames assistant coach Brad Larsen was granted an indefinite leave of absence on Dec. 8 due to family reasons, and Calgary will be adding Trent Cull to its bench for the “unforeseeable future.”
The Calgary Flames announced a pair of interim coaching appointments on Sunday evening.
Flames assistant coach Brad Larsen was granted an indefinite leave of absence on Dec. 8 due to family reasons, and Calgary will be adding Trent Cull to its bench for the “unforeseeable future” as a result.
Cull was serving as the head coach of the Calgary Wranglers — the Flames’ AHL affiliate. He last served as an NHL coach with the Vancouver Canucks in the 2022-23 season.
“Our priority is to provide Brad and his family with continued support during this period when they need it most,” said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy in a statement released by the team. “While Brad remains with his family, we have made these interim adjustments to our coaching staff to ensure our team and development program have the resources required to excel. Our organizational bench strength allows us to confidently make these moves without interruption to performance.”
Wranglers assistant coach Joe Cirella will take over as the head coach of the AHL club on an interim basis and will be joined by former Flame forward Martin Gelinas in an assistant capacity. Gelinas has served on Calgary’s development staff for the past four seasons and was an assistant coach with the Flames from 2012 to 2021.
