Another member of the Calgary Flames will be suiting up at this year’s world championships.

The Flames announced Tuesday that captain Mikael Backlund will represent Sweden on home ice for the tournament, which starts on May 9.

Backlund is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he scored 15 goals and 32 points over 76 games for Calgary.

The 36-year-old centre last took the ice for Sweden at the world championships in 2018, where he served as team captain, scored twice and had nine points over 10 games, leading his country to the gold medal.

In total, Backlund has 45 games of experience with Sweden’s senior national team over his career.

Backlund will join Flames teammates MacKenzie Weegar (Canada), Rasmus Andersson (Sweden), Matt Coronato (U.S.) and Dan Vladar (Czechia) among the players committed to continuing their seasons in Stockholm. Rookie defenceman Zayne Parekh is also expected to join Canada for its pre-tournament games.
