Igor Shesterkin pulled after Rangers fall behind 5-0 to Sabres in first

This wasn’t the kind of return Igor Shesterkin or New York Rangers envisioned.

The star goaltender was replaced by Jonathan Quick late in the first period on Saturday after the lowly Buffalo Sabres went up 5-0 on the Rangers. Shesterkin gave up five goals on 16 shots as the NHL returned to action following the 4 Nations Face-Off break

Shesterkin told reporters on Thursday that he was ready to return from an upper-body injury for Saturday’s game.

Shesterkin sustained an upper-body injury ahead of the 4 Nations break against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 7. The goalie remained in the game, but the team later announced he would be out for one-to-two weeks with the ailment.

In 39 games prior to Saturday this season, the former Vezina Trophy winner recorded a .906 save percentage, 2.87 goals-against average and three shutouts with an 18-19-2 record.

The Rangers entered the game four points out of a playoff spot.
