The New York Islanders have been red-hot lately but if that success is going to continue, it will have to be without the team’s top forward.

Mathew Barzal will be out indefinitely with a lower-body injury after blocking a shot over the weekend. Additionally, defenceman Scott Mayfield is day-to-day with his own lower-body injury.

Barzal and Mayfield were both injured in Saturday’s win over the Lightning, and both missed Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. That loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Islanders, who have surged up the standings in the crowded east wild-card race.

Barzal and Mayfield’s absences add to a long list of injuries for the Islanders, especially on the blue line. That list includes Noah Dobson (lower body), Ryan Pulock (upper body), Mike Reilly (chest) and Semyon Varlamov (lower body).
