Jared Goff: We always knew Jahmyr Gibbs was up to heavier workload
The Lions still don't know if there's any chance of running back David Montgomery making it back into the lineup this season, but they've professed full confidence in Jahmyr Gibbs's ability to handle the load as a lead back if necessary.
The Lions still don't know if there's any chance of running back David Montgomery making it back into the lineup this season, but they've professed full confidence in Jahmyr Gibbs's ability to handle the load as a lead back if necessary.
Gibbs got his chance to back up that confidence on Sunday and he didn't let the Lions down. Gibbs had a season-high 23 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown while also catching four passes for 45 yards in the 34-17 win. Head coach Dan Campbell said in his press conference that he "didn't think we missed a beat" without Montgomery and Goff said Gibbs reinforced everything the team believed about his ability.
"We always knew," Goff said, via the team's website. "Obviously showed it today. I thought he ran great. I thought he saw it great. I thought he caught it out of the backfield great. He did a hell of a job."
The injuries that have hit the Lions across the roster will force a number of players into different roles heading into the postseason. If they can handle it as well as Gibbs did on Sunday, the team should remain in strong shape in the NFC.
