Jets’ Dylan Samberg exits after taking puck to knee vs. Oilers

Dylan Samberg‘s night appears to be over.

The Winnipeg Jets‘ defenceman was forced to exit Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers after taking a puck to his left knee area courtesy of a Connor McDavid one-timer.

Edmonton went on to score on the play while Samberg remained down on the ice, writhing in pain. The Oilers would end up winning the contest 4-1.

While some, like Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele, looked for an explanation as to why play wasn’t blown to a stoppage after the injury, it’s because the Oilers maintained possession while they were in the offensive zone and on a 5-on-4 power play.

As noted on the broadcast, “that is the rule.”

Had the Jets taken possession of the puck, the play would have been blown dead.

Instead, the Oilers kept their attack going while playing five against three, until Adam Henrique batted in the team’s second goal of the evening.

Samberg eventually got up and was helped off the ice. No update has been made on his status since. The 26-year-old has 20 points with Winnipeg this season and is a plus-35 through his 59 appearances.

Thankfully for Jets fans, head coach Scott Arniel seemed optimistic of Samberg’s status after the loss, noting that he believes the defenceman is “okay,” per Sportsnet’s Jacob Stoller.

Winnipeg won’t return to action until Wednesday — potentially giving Samberg some time to recover — before the Jets host the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers, meanwhile, will get much less rest as they’ll welcome the Los Angeles Kings to Edmonton on Monday for their second game in as many days.
