Following the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 defeat of the Detroit Red Wings — a game where Matvei Michkov attempted but failed the Michigan — the head coach spoke to the media about his displeasure with the shot.
“I’ve lost the battle,” Tortorella said. I don’t think it should be in our game, but I’ve lost that battle.”
The failed attempt on Thursday wasn’t Michkov’s first go at trying to score a Michigan this season either. Something the Flyers bench boss has already spoken to the 20-year-old about.
“I have talked to him earlier in the year when he was doing it every time and it was just turnovers. The thing I want (Michkov) to understand is he’s just such a good player at moving the puck and passing the puck, when he’s behind the net he’s dangerous to make plays,” Tortorella said.
“What am I going to do, say ‘don’t do it?’ What I did is I said, ‘you need to understand that there are other plays to be made there too.’”
Michkov is second on the Flyers in scoring this season with 11 goals and 27 points in 28 games.
The Russian youngster was also healthy scratched twice this season, but has since returned as a regular in the lineup.
