Knights’ Easton Cowan records point in 62nd straight game, breaks CHL record
Cowan recorded an assist during the first period of the London Knights’ 4-1 win over the North Bay Battalion, marking his 62nd consecutive game with a point, besting the record set by Mario Lemieux in 1983-84.
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan now stands alone in the CHL record book, albeit unofficially.
Cowan recorded an assist during the first period of the London Knights’ 4-1 win over the North Bay Battalion, marking his 62nd consecutive game with a point, besting the record set by Mario Lemieux in 1983-84.
The record, which dates back to last November, is unofficial because it spans two seasons but passes Lemieux’s total with the Laval Voisins.
Cowan has 42 goals and 104 points in his streak. Lemieux posted a mind-boggling 133 goals and 282 points during his.
“You don’t see that very often,” Knights GM Mark Hunter told the London Free Press. “You talk about really great players that have done this — Doug Gilmour and Mario Lemieux. When you get put in that category, it’s a special thing. His preparation is something all young men should watch and follow. He knows what he needs to do to start every game and he’s ready to play.
“He doesn’t have many games where he’s not ready to play. That’s a credit to him and his understanding of what needs to be done to get ready.”
The Maple Leafs selected Cowan in the first round, 28th overall, in 2023. The right winger from Mount Brydges, Ont., is expected to challenge for a spot on the Leafs as early as next season.
In Thursday’s win, Cowan’s record-breaking assist came on an Oliver Bonk marker to even the score at one. Henry Brzustewicz, Sam Dickinson and Denver Barkey had the other goals for London.
