Lane Hutson becomes fastest Canadiens defenceman to reach 50 career points

Even in his rookie season, Lane Hutson is breaking records.

Hutson has reached 50 points in 63 games, beating out Chris Chelios, who did it in 66 games, and making him the fastest Montreal Canadien defenceman to reach that milestone.

After two assists in Monday night’s contest against the Buffalo Sabres, Hutson’s points total grew to 48 this season on top of the two he scored last year.

Hutson is now tied for 11th for fewest games to 50 career points by defencemen in NHL history. Vladimir Malakhov also reached the milestone in 63 games during the 1992-93 season.

However, Hutson is the second fastest defenceman to 50 in the salary cap era, having only been beaten by Cale Makar, who did it during the 2019-2020 season in 57 games.

The 21-year-old has four goals and 42 assists in 60 games this season, putting him well within the Calder trophy race.
