The Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender was pulled in the first period of the team’s outing against the Golden Knights on Wednesday night after allowing three goals on seven shots.
Anthony Stolarz took his place between the pipes.
It was a brutal night for Woll, as he gave up a goal on the second shot he faced after a rebound fell right to a streaking Tomas Hertl, free to tuck it into the empty net.
Then, less than seven minutes later, he gave up a very preventable goal to centre Brett Howden, who fired a backhand at the goalie that wound up bouncing off the underside of Woll’s arm and in.
The straw that broke the camel’s back came with five minutes left in the first frame and Vegas on the power play, as superstar Jack Eichel teed up a one-timer glove-side to snipe a third goal past Woll.
It’s been a rough two-game stretch for the 26-year-old netminder, as his last outing against the Pittsburgh Penguins saw him give up five goals on 34 shots in a winning effort.
However, Leafs fans should find some hope in learning that this is the first time Woll has been pulled over his 65 career starts — it was bound to happen eventually.
The fourth-year goaltender has remained a bright spot for the Maple Leafs this season, as he carries a 21-11-0 record in Wednesday’s outing, with a 2.70 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.
