Defenceman Dakota Mermis was recalled from the AHL on an emergency basis, the team announced ahead of a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
The Maple Leafs played with just five defencemen on Saturday as the injured Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson were unable to suit up while salary-cap restrictions meant a call-up was not possible until the team played one game short-handed.
Toronto still went on to beat the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 in overtime.
Mermis, 31, has played one NHL game this season with the Utah Hockey Club, recording two penalty minutes and a minus-2.
The Alton, Ill., native has skated in 75 games for his career, notching four goals and eight assists over stints with Arizona, New Jersey, Minnesota and Utah. He has seven helpers in 32 appearances this season for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
The Maple Leafs return to the ice Sunday at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT to face the Hurricanes. Live coverage is available on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
