Earlier today, the Dolphins provided a positive update on receiver Grant DuBose, who suffered a serious head injury during Sunday's game in Houston. Coach Mike McDaniel elaborated on the situation during his usual Monday press conference.
"We’ll be excited to see him when doctors deem it appropriate for him to fly," McDaniel told reporters. "I’d also like to commend the collective training staffs — both ours and the Texans’ and the doctors involved for handling a situation as they did. It was imperative for him.
McDaniel also addressed the emotional realities for the rest of the team, arising from the nature of the injury and the concern it created.
“It’s something that I think the only way you get through something like that is with your teammates," McDaniel said. "I think we needed each other at that time, and you also have in the back of your mind, knowing Grant and what would make him proud and just the human being that he is, so you’re trying to do right by him and the team and the situation. There’s no really right answer, ultimately. I said last night, you have to kind of lean on the factors of your responsibilities to a lot of different people."
The aftermath of a severe injury is always awkward. The player is taken for proper care, and the game continues. That's what was going to happen nearly two years ago after the Damar Hamlin incident, because that's what always happens.
The player receives attention on the field, the player is removed from the field, and the rest of the players keep playing. The Hamlin situation was sufficiently dire to reverse the usual approach. In the vast majority of situations, the show goes on.
It's difficult for everyone, especially the players. They witness a very real example of the risks of the sport they play, and then they assume that same risk for the rest of the game.
