Oilers’ Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl to miss at least one week

The Edmonton Oilers got some bad news about their two superstars Friday.

According to head coach Kris Knoblauch, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will not play Saturday against the Seattle Kraken and are expected to miss at least a week.

The announcement comes as Knoblauch also confirmed that the pair were having imaging done on their injuries.

The injury to McDavid appeared to occur during his final shift of the second period in Thursday night’s game against the Jets.

As the star forward chased a puck in the Winnipeg zone, Jets defender Josh Morrissey made contact with McDavid, appearing to clip him with his stick in the midsection.

McDavid appeared to be in immediate discomfort. He sat on the bench for the short remainder of the second but did not come out for the final frame and was quickly ruled out.

After the game, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters he had no update on McDavid.

Meanwhile, Draisaitl was listed as doubtful and eventually determined he could not play after suffering an undisclosed injury on Tuesday against Utah. Goaltender Stuart Skinner was also pulled from the loss to the Jets late in the third period with an injury.

The Oilers sit second in the Pacific Division with 84 points but are aiming to catch the Vegas Golden Knights (86 points) for first place.

McDavid, even in a relatively down year, has posted otherworldly numbers with 89 points (26 goals, 63 assists) in 62 games. He scored the overtime winner for Canada to beat the U.S. in the 4 Nations Face-Off final.
