The Edmonton Oilers are inching back to full strength.

Connor McDavid hit the ice in a non-contact grey jersey for practice on Tuesday, his first time skating with the team since suffering an undisclosed injury.

McDavid has been out since March 20, when a collision with Josh Morrissey knocked him out of a game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch said Sunday that his captain would at least miss Tuesday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights and Thursday’s meeting with the San Jose Sharks.

The Oilers’ next game after that comes Saturday on the road against the Los Angeles Kings.

“It should be before the regular season ends,” Knoblauch said of McDavid’s return. “I think the most important thing is he’s healthy and 100 per cent for the playoffs.”

Edmonton did get half of its superstar duo back on Saturday when Leon Draisaitl returned from an injury of his own in dramatic fashion, scoring the equalizer late in the third for his 50th of the season and following it up with an OT winner (No. 51) to hand the Oilers a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames.

The Oilers sit third in the Pacific Division with 89 points, two back of the Kings and nine behind the division-leading Golden Knights.
