EDMONTON — Quinn Hutson’s career may be starting off as planned, even if his connecting flight through Denver did not.
“It was a little crazy,” he said. “Flying Denver to here (Edmonton) … taking off, the engine caught on fire. So (they made an) emergency landing. A little scared there for a second, but still made it.”
Is he a nervous flyer? Well, he wasn’t …
“I make jokes about (flying) all the time,” he said. “I’ll stop making jokes about it now.”
Hutson, whose Boston University Terriers lost over the weekend in the NCAA championship game, signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Edmonton Oilers, and will burn off Year 1 when he plays Monday night against the Los Angeles Kings (8 p.m. MT / 10 p.m. ET), and likely Wednesday in Edmonton’s season finale in San Jose.

He is 23, a right winger and stands five-foot-11 and 176 pounds. Hutson is not eligible to play for Edmonton in the post-season.
Hutson spoke with his younger brother, the Calder Trophy favourite Lane Hutson, who has busted on to the scene in Montreal, about playing in a Canadian market.
“He’s obviously got one of the hardest markets to play in, so he has a lot of experience,” Hutson said. “He said, ‘Don’t worry about it. Just play your game.’”
Hutson skated out during a practice Monday with about only six other players, but that group included Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Evander Kane and Leon Draisaitl.
“Just the pressure part,” he said, smiling. “You definitely get a little bit more nervous seeing guys out there like that. Guys I’ve watched my whole life. So you don’t want to make them upset. You want to make the right plays out there.”

Injury Updates
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch was drilled on all his injured players and their various statuses. Here’s the rundown:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — Playing Monday and back in the lineup going forward.
Leon Draisaitl — Out Monday, questionable for San Jose, likely for Game 1.
Jake Walman — “Not playing tonight. Maybe in San Jose, maybe Game 1 of the playoffs.”
Troy Stecher — Not playing Monday. Probable for Game 1.
Zach Hyman — Not playing Monday. Probable for Game 1.
Trent Frederic — “Hopeful he can play at the start of the playoffs.”
Evander Kane — Still needs medical clearance. Maybe Game 1 of playoffs.
Mattias Ekholm — “Not playing anytime soon. Will miss Round 1.”
Connor McDavid — Out Monday to rest, expected to play in San Jose. “Too much to lose. We’re playing that extremely safely.”
Also, Noah Philp and Derek Ryan were sent down to Bakersfield to make room for Hutson and defenceman Josh Brown, who will both play Monday. Oilers will play a man short versus the Kings, with just 11 forwards. Calvin Pickard gets the start in goal.
Knoblauch on losing Ekholm: “He’s a big guy. He’s strong and checks all the boxes. Matthias is a really good player.”
Still, he’s bullish on the lineup he’ll take into the post-season, however sketchy.
“The fact that we have a lot of guys who were anticipating to come back and start the playoffs — the McDavids, Draisaitls, Hymans. You know, those guys are pretty important,” he said. “I wouldn’t be as confident or looking forward to it as much as I am, if those guys weren’t in the position they are.”

Kane is able
Evander Kane still requires medical clearance after abdominal and knee surgeries, and he hasn’t played a game since last spring’s Stanley Cup Final. But ask him — and we did just that Monday — and he’ll tell you he plans on being a factor in this year’s playoffs for the Oilers.
“If you’re asking me if I’m ready for Game 1, I could barely skate and I played in the playoffs last year,” he said. “If you’re comparing how I feel now to last year, I’m ready to go.”
Kane has spent an entire season rehabbing a double surgery. It’s hard to see any player jumping on the moving train that is playoff hockey after not playing a single game all season long.
But Kane is one confident dude. And Lord knows the ailing Oilers could use some help.
“I have a lot of self-belief,” Kane said. “Going off last year … and how I felt throughout that year, what I was able to do, that gives me confidence with how I feel now.
“I feel a lot more confident coming back this year at this time, being in shape, being ready, and feeling as good as I possibly can for when I do come back.”
