Panthers announce eight-year extension with Verhaeghe after winning season opener

The Florida Panthers had a lot to celebrate following their season opener.

After raising their Stanley Cup banner and knocking off the Boston Bruins 6-4, the team announced that forward Carter Verhaeghe agreed to a contract extension.

General manager Bill Zito announced that the deal is for eight years and comes with a $7 million cap hit starting in the 2025-26 season.

The 29-year-old was entering the final year of his deal that would have made him a free agent at the end of the season.

Verhaeghe is coming off back-to-back seasons where he has registered 70-plus points. The Toronto native has been a valuable contributor since joining the club as a free agent in 2020.

In 330 career games, Verhaeghe has 127 goals and 249 points. He was selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
