The Florida Panthers defenceman was fined $5,000 — the maximum allowable under the CBA — for unsportsmanlike conduct stemming from an incident against the Montreal Canadiens, the department of player safety announced Monday.
As the buzzer sounded on the Canadiens’ 4-2 win over the Panthers on Sunday, Mikkola launched a slapshot in the direction of Montreal’s net from behind his own blue-line, nearly hitting defenceman David Savard along the way.
The Canadiens took exception and chaos ensued. Mikkola was the only player involved in the scrum to face supplemental discipline.
The Panthers and Canadiens will face each other again on Tuesday.
