The New York Rangers made a non-trade transaction on deadline day.

New York signed defenceman Urho Vaakanainen to a contract extension on Friday, the team announced. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the deal is for two years with a $1.55-million AAV.

Vaakanainen was acquired by the Rangers earlier this season in the deal that sent Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. He has two goals and seven assists in 30 games for New York this season.

The 26-year-old defenceman has three goals and 31 assists in 171 career NHL games with the Rangers, Ducks and Boston Bruins.

He was also a member of Finland’s squad at last month’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
