The Detroit Red Wings have lost an important piece down the middle for the remainder of the season.
Centre Andrew Copp has had surgery to repair his left pectoral tendon, the team announced on Tuesday. The recovery time is expected to be 4-6 months.
The injury means Copp, a Michigan native, will miss Saturday’s Stadium Series game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It also leaves the Red Wings with a hole at centre, less than two weeks before the trade deadline.
Copp was injured in Saturday’s loss to the Minnesota Wild, which was his 700th NHL game. Earlier in the game, he recorded his 300th point with an assist on Alex DeBrincat’s first-period goal.
Copp has 23 points in 56 games while skating on both special teams.
The Red Wings face the Wild again on Tuesday and enter play in the first wild-card spot in the east with 64 points.
