The San Jose Sharks will reportedly start Alexandar Georgiev in both games of a back-to-back as the trade deadline looms.

Vitek Vanecek, who was scheduled to start Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres, will instead remain on the bench for trade-related reasons, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.

Georgiev made 25 saves plus three more in the shootout to help the Sharks beat the Maple Leafs on Monday.

Vanecek is in his first season with the Sharks and has a career-worst .882 save percentage in 18 appearances. He only has three wins on the season.

The pending unrestricted free agent has a $3.4 million salary cap hit. Notably, the Sharks have used all three salary retention spots, meaning an acquiring team would need to take on Vanecek’s full salary or broker a deal with a third team to absorb some of his salary.

The Sharks enter play last in the NHL standings with a 16-37-9 record. The club has already traded veterans Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci to the Stars and moved goalie MacKenzie Blackwood to the Avalanche for Georgiev earlier this season.
