Sabres’ Lindy Ruff ‘lost for words’ as losing streak hits 10 games

The season is quickly slipping away for the Buffalo Sabres.

With a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, the Sabres have now dropped 10 straight games and tumbled to second-last in the conference. The Sabres led 2-0 and 3-1 in Sunday’s game, but the Maple Leafs rattled off three quick goals in the second period to take over the contest.

“I’m almost lost for words, obviously. It’s on me to solve this,” head coach Lindy Ruff said after Sunday’s loss. “This is the toughest solve I’ve been around, but it is on me to get these guys in the right place and win a hockey game and nobody else. Just me.”

Ruff was re-hired by the Sabres this summer after previously coaching the team for over 16 years and through its two most successful eras. The Sabres have missed the playoffs in each of the last 14 years, and Ruff was behind the bench the last time they reached the post-season, in 2011-12.

The Sabres are 0-7-3 during this winless slide and have been outscored 38-23. Their 26 points are tied with the Anaheim Ducks and ahead of only the Montreal Canadiens (25), Chicago Blackhawks (22) and Nashville Predators (22) in the overall standings.
