Senators close in on playoff berth with win over Blue Jackets

Ottawa Senators fans likely will get to celebrate the end of their playoff drought early this week.

The Senators moved within close reach of locking up a post-season spot with a 4-0 win over the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

Assuming Ottawa locks things up, it will mark the Senators’ first playoff appearance since 2017.

The Senators have a big lead in the race for the first wild-card spot, but also might be able to move up into the top three in the Atlantic Division.

Ottawa posted back-to-back shutouts this weekend, starting with a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

Linus Ullmark notched the shutout versus the Blue Jackets, after Anton Forsberg shut the door against Florida.

Adam Gaudette, Nikolas Matinpalo, David Perron and Shane Pinto scored Sunday for Ottawa.

Columbus also played in back-to-back shutouts this weekend, though it was the Blue Jackets failing to score a goal, diminishing their playoff hopes. On Saturday, Columbus was blanked by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
