The United States opened the world junior hockey championship with a resounding 10-4 win over Germany on Thursday, and they were rewarded with an appearance from a special guest.
Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, who played for the U.S. in the 2018 tournament, stopped by the team’s locker room after the win to give the youngsters some words of encouragement.
“There are the memories that you’re going to take home and always kind of remember,” Tkachuk said to the team. “These events and these moments that everyone steps up for it.”
In 2018, Tkachuk and the Americans had to settle for bronze, but he’s confident this year’s version of the U.S. is going bring home the gold.
“I know everyone on our team, across the league, everybody watches, everybody takes pride in each country,” Tkachuk said. “But I know the U.S. boys are going to come out on top.”
Thursday’s 10-4 win was a good start for Tkachuk’s prediction, as led by two goals and two assists from James Hagans, the Americans proved why many consider them the favourite to bring home gold.
Tkachuk will get his own chance to represent the stars and stripes in February, as he and his brother Matthew will represent the Americans at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.
