Sharks captain Logan Couture officially ends playing career
Logan Couture is officially hanging ’em up. The San Jose Sharks captain officially ended his playing career on Tuesday, ending his 16-year NHL journey. The 36-year-old centre from Guelph, Ont. will remain on long-term injured reserve and his contract will stay on the books through the 2026-27 season. “Unfortunately, due to my injury, I am no longer able to play hockey,” Couture said at a press conference held by the Sharks. “I’m extremely grateful and proud to have played 16 years in the best league in the world.” Couture has been dealing with symptoms related to Osteitis Pubis, which resulted in him playing only six games since the start of the 2023-24 season. The San Jose captain played a total of 933 games, registering 323 goals and 378 assists for 701 points, all ranking within the top five in Sharks history. Couture is also one of 59 players in NHL history to reach 900 games, 300 goals and 700 points with one franchise, and the third to do so with San Jose after Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau. “From the first time he set foot on the ice with a Sharks sweater on, Logan has been the consummate professional,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said in a statement. “He has been a great leader on and off the ice and always led by example through his work ethic and play. “… What I admired most about Logan is when the games mattered the most, he always elevated to a whole new level.” The centre was a key cog in leading the Sharks to nine playoff berths across 10 seasons, four conference finals appearances and the franchise’s lone Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2015-’16. With Couture from 2009-’10, San Jose won 60 playoff games, the fourth most in the NHL in that span.
