After playing his first NHL game on Thursday, San Jose Sharks star rookie Macklin Celebrini is going on the injured reserve.
The team announced the move Saturday ahead of their second game of the season, recalling defenceman Jack Thompson to take Celebrini’s spot on the roster.
Clebrini was held out of practice on Friday with a lower-body injury.
Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky didn’t confirm whether the injury was suffered in San Jose’s overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues or if it was lingering from training camp.
During the pre-season, Celebrini went down with a lower-body ailment and was forced to leave a game against Utah Hockey Club on Oct. 2. He was tripped up on a breakaway chance and fell hard into the boards.
Celebrini scored the opening goal of the Sharks’ season in the first period, deflecting the puck off Blues defenceman Matthew Kessel for his first NHL tally.
The 18-year-old was selected first overall by San Jose in the 2024 NHL Draft. He later assisted on Tyler Toffoli’s first-period goal, becoming the youngest player to record two points in the first period of their debut.
According to The Mercury News‘s Curtis Pashelka, centre Mikael Granlund filled in for Celebrini on the top line during Friday’s practice.
