After falling short in the 2023 PLP final, Shaw wasted no time in his pursuit of redemption. The Brit opened with two commanding victories, conceding just four racks in total against Moritz Neuhausen and Duong Quoc Hoang. He then rounded off a perfect start with a 5-3 win over Tyler Styer in a highly anticipated Mosconi Cup clash.
UK Open champion Robbie Capito made a stunning debut, matching Shaw with a flawless 3-0 record. His campaign began in dramatic fashion as he edged past AJ Manas, capitalising on a costly scratch in the final rack to clear up with a 3-9 combo. He followed it up with dominant performances against Sanjin Pehlivanovic and Edward Koyongian, securing his spot at the top alongside Shaw.
Defending champion Shane Van Boening also made a strong start, securing three wins but falling just short of the top due to a higher number of racks lost. The American was pushed to the limit in a hill-hill thriller against Pijus Labutis before finding his rhythm with convincing wins over Kledio Kaçi and former PLP champion Francisco Sánchez Ruiz. Meanwhile, reigning Hanoi Open champion Johann Chua positioned himself in third place after a solid opening day. The Filipino star picked up three victories, defeating Bui Truong, Tyler Styer, and Pijus Labutis as he hunts for another Matchroom title.
Another standout debut came from Kledio Kaçi, who finished the day in fifth place. The younger Kaçi made an early statement by edging out his older brother and World Championship runner-up Eklent Kaçi 5-4. He followed it up with a win over Bui Truong but fell short against Van Boening, preventing him from climbing higher up the table.
It was a tough start for Vietnam’s Duong Quoc Hoang and Bui Truong, who remain winless at the bottom of the table after a challenging opening day in their first PLP. They are joined by hometown favourite Sanjin Pehlivanovic, who despite thriving in the European Open Pool Championship, struggled on the opening day, losing to Aloysius Yapp and PLP debutants Robbie Capito and Moritz Neuhausen.
