Stars coach DeBoer says Seguin ‘looking good’ but unsure of Heiskanen’s playoff status

The Dallas Stars appear to be getting some clarity on their injury situation heading into the closing stretch of the regular season.

Centre Tyler Seguin, who’s been out of the lineup since the start of December due to a hip injury, appears to be on track for a return “by the end of the year,” according to DeBoer.
DeBoer added that the six-time All-Star is “looking good” and skating regularly, and although he would not commit to Seguin’s return to the lineup for the end of the regular season, he said the 33-year-old is meeting all their projections for a return at this point.

Seguin has played in just 19 games this season due to his hip issue, posting nine goals and 11 assists with a plus-14 in that span. He’s in the sixth year of an eight-year, $78.8-million deal, with an annual cap hit of $9.85 million.
The Brampton, Ont., native was drafted second overall by the Boston Bruins in 2010, winning a Stanley Cup with the team in his rookie year. After four seasons, however, Seguin was dealt to the Stars, who he’s been with for the last 12 years.
DeBoer’s update for Miro Heiskanen, who’s been out of the lineup since early February due to knee surgery, wasn’t as positive.
The Stars bench boss would go as far as only to say there’s been “progress” but that the defenceman is still not on the ice, primarily working in the gym. When asked if Dallas anticipates having to play a first-round series without Heiskanen, DeBoer said, “Yeah, that’s a realistic possibility.”
The Finn has played 50 games for the Stars this season, logging five goals and 20 assists with a plus-seven in that span. Despite missing 16 games to this point, Heiskanen ranks within the top 10 on the roster for assists, total points and plus/minus. He’s third on the team for total ice time, second for average time on ice (25:10), fourth for blocks (85) and T1 in takeaways (28).
Despite the injuries, and a two-game skid, the Stars sit second in the Central Division with a 42-21-3 record. As things stand, they’d take on the Colorado Avalanche in the first round.
