Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer told reporters Tuesday that top defenceman Miro Heiskanen will be out month-to-month after undergoing successful knee surgery.
Heiskanen was hurt during the third period of the Stars’ 4-3 overtime win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 28. As Heiskanen was skating with the puck, Vegas captain Mark Stone fell into his leg and the Stars defender needed assistance leaving the ice.
Stone was penalized for tripping but did not receive any additional discipline from the league.
Heiskanen has five goals and 20 assists in 50 games this season and leads the team with an average of 25:10 in ice time.
The 25-year-old from Espoo, Finland, will miss the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, which begins next week in Montreal and Boston.
Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpää was also ruled out due to injury with Finland naming Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres and Urho Vaakanainen of the New York Rangers as replacements.
The Stars (34-17-1) are second in the Central Division and look to prolong their five-game winning streak when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.
