Team Canada to start Jordan Binnington in 4 Nations Face-Off opener vs. Sweden

Team Canada is going with experience in net at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington has been named the starter for the team’s tournament opener against Sweden on Wednesday, coach Jon Cooper told reporters in Montreal on Tuesday.

Binnington gets the nod over Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights and Samuel Montembeault of the Montreal Canadiens.

The 31-year-old Binnington has played 319 career NHL regular-season games, as compared to 186 for Montembeault, 28, and 170 for Hill, 28. Binnington also has played 41 playoff games to Hill’s 19 and Montembeault’s zero.

Binnington won a Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019. He has a 2.89 goals-against average and .896 save percentage this season.

Goaltending widely is considered Canada’s potential biggest weakness.
