The fact GSP shows CTE symptoms is terrifying

GSP has talked about having periods where he misses time and has bouts of forgetfulness, which he's semi-seriously attributed to aliens (1). As many have said many of his issues can be explained by CTE or other forms of brain damage, which is honestly just so scary. He's barely lost; had a very safe, defensive style; tended to take fights to the ground; and has on many times espoused the benefits of light sparring. If he can be brain damaged by the sport basically nobody is safe from it. I really think something needs to change. Abundant studies have confirmed padding just allows people to hit harder and thus causes more brain damage--the UFC went in the right direction by reducing the glove size, but reverted it once knockout rate went down. Maybe shorter rounds could be used too, making them three minutes with a grappling overtime so people still have time to work for subs. I feel like this would also up the pace and make things more exciting. Anyway, just wanted to share and as a reminder to fighters and people to train to be so careful with this kind of shit. submitted by /u/Doubtt_ [link] [comments]
