On his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Gretzky as “the greatest Canadian” and emphasized his loyalty to Canada.
However, he continued to suggest that Canada would benefit from becoming America’s 51st state.
The controversy follows Gretzky’s role as Team Canada’s honourary captain at the Four Nations Face-Off.
Gretzky has faced backlash in Canada for supporting Trump, including attending his election party and inauguration.
Trump has also frequently mocked Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau as “governor” and threatened stiff tariffs on Canadian trade.
